Math K-6

Since the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics was published in 1989, there has been a change in how mathematics is taught in Saint Paul. The Saint Paul Public School District endorses Reform Mathematics, also known as a standards-based curriculum or integrated mathematics approach.

This student-centered approach to mathematics connects what is taught and how it is taught. The mathematical content of the curriculum is shaped by how students learn to work with mathematics processes embedded in the curriculum. Observations of patterns and relationships lie at the heart of acquiring deep understanding in mathematics. Reform Mathematics is organized around problem solving that allows students to discuss, test, and generalize the patterns and relationships observed. Such classrooms encourage high-level thinking and problem solving that helps students make sense of mathematics and its many applications.

As part of the Project for Academic Excellence, math content coaches provide assistance to school sites. Coaches working with school staff have aligned the Minnesota State Math Standards with the integrated math curriculums leading to the development of a curriculum framework to support classroom instruction. Coaches provide curriculum support, instructional support, resources support, and professional development.

There are a variety of mathematic curriculums taught at the various sites and grade levels within the Saint Paul Schools. Students moving from one school to another will find that some adjustments to the school schedule and the textbook series are required. Parents and students need to consider these options when selecting a school. Please contact the Center for Academic Excellence to learn more.
