Second language instruction in Saint Paul Public Schools is designed to facilitate genuine interaction with others. Students learn to communicate with people in other cultures in a variety of settings, look beyond their customary borders, and develop insight into their own language and culture. Research indicates that the process of studying another language gives students a cognitive boost in other subject areas, enabling them to perform at higher levels.
Saint Paul Schools offer a variety of world language programs at the various sites and grade levels. Offerings include American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Hmong, Japanese, Lakota/Dakota, Latin, Ojibwe, Russian, and Spansh. The district also has French Immersion schools, Spanish Immersion schools, and programs for native speakers.
Parents and students may wish to learn more about individual school programs when selecting a school. Please contact the Center for Academic Excellence to learn more.
