New Saint Paul Plan Coming Soon!
Arts for All Saint Paul Plan
is providing a strong vision for schools and the arts community to work together to improve arts opportunities for students in all schools.

The Saint Paul Arts Education Task Force developed the plan to highlight the positive influence of the arts on student learning and the role of the arts in continuous school improvement. The plan outlines the vision and strategies for bringing arts education to all students. The goal is to increase student achievement in all subjects by capturing students' interest and imagination with the arts.

"This plan shows what the Saint Paul Public Schools can do in collaboration with its communities to build upon the district's many strengths", said Saint Paul Board of Education Chairman Al Oertwig at the formal announcement of the plan. In fact, contact information for more than 50 arts organizations that work in Saint Paul schools is listed in the plan as a resource for schools.

The plan's development began about three years ago with an Arts Town Meeting to gather ideas about arts advancement. Since then, more than 300 people including educators, parents, students, artists and arts organizations contributed ideas and information to the arts plan.

The arts plan outlines a vision for opportunities and experiences in the arts for all Saint Paul students. To achieve the vision, the Saint Paul Public Schools will use the following strategies in collaboration with families, artists, and the entire community:

1. provide resources and technical assistance to educators, enabling all students to achieve the state standards in the arts;
2. develop staff capacities in the arts on many levels;
3. nurture and deepen existing partnerships with community arts resources and seek new partnerships;
4. encourage comprehensive, school-wide arts education assessment, planning, and implementation;
5. assure that the district makes its commitment to arts education clear and thoroughly analyzes the current and desired status of the learning area;
6. weave the arts into education initiatives and use the arts as a resource for special needs of schools and students; and
7.

support internally and seek funding externally for activities and programs that significantly advance arts opportunities for all.

The importance of the arts is illustrated in the school district's 2002-2005 Action Plan, which serves as the school districts road map for continuing its work to build a world-class education system in Saint Paul. A high priority for the school district is to implement research-based, best practices approaches to teaching in several core areas, including the arts.
